Horchata is a sweet rice beverage that is traditionally flavored with cinnamon, vanilla, almonds, and sometimes even chocolate. It is a great way to start off your day with some good nutrition and a little bit of sweetness!


Here is how to make the horchata recipe at home:

  • 6 cups water, divided
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1 cup uncooked white rice
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar

Instructions for Horchata Recipe


Step 1

Add 3 cups of water, almonds, cinnamon stick, and the rice, to a blender. Blend for 1-3 minutes until the mixture is smooth as possible.

Step 2

Transfer the mixture to a large bowl, add the remaining water, cover and let the mixture sit and soak in the refrigerator for 8 hours or overnight.

Step 3

Pour the mixture through a fine mesh strainer 2 to 4 times and into another pitcher, until the mix is no longer gritty and is as smooth as you can get it.

Step 4

Add the sugar, vanilla extract, and milk, and stir until thoroughly combined. Taste and sweeten with more sugar if you prefer.

Step 5

Serve the horchata over ice with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and enjoy!
