  • ¼ cup warm water (104 to 115 degrees)
  • 2 (.25 ounce) envelopes of active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cup lukewarm milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup shortening
  • 1-quart vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 cups confectioners' sugar
  • 4 tablespoons of hot water or as needed.
  • ⅓ cup butter
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

Directions for a homemade donut recipe

Step 1

Sprinkle yeast over warm water, and let it stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.

  In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups of the flour, yeast mixture, milk, sugar, shortening, and eggs. stirring with a wooden spoon or mix for a few minutes at low speed in the dough mixture. Beat in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. until smooth and elastic. Knead for about 5 minutes.
