- ¼ cup warm water (104 to 115 degrees)
- 2 (.25 ounce) envelopes of active dry yeast
- 1 ½ cup lukewarm milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ cup white sugar
- 2 eggs
- 5 cups all-purpose flour
- ⅓ cup shortening
- 1-quart vegetable oil for frying
- 2 cups confectioners' sugar
- 4 tablespoons of hot water or as needed.
- ⅓ cup butter
- 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
Directions for a homemade donut recipe
Step 1
Sprinkle yeast over warm water, and let it stand for 5 minutes, or until foamy.
Step 2
In a large bowl, mix together 2 cups of the flour, yeast mixture, milk, sugar, shortening, and eggs. stirring with a wooden spoon or mix for a few minutes at low speed in the dough mixture. Beat in the remaining flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. until smooth and elastic. Knead for about 5 minutes. Cover the dough in a greased bowl and keep it in a warm place. To rise until double.
Step 3
Turn the dough out onto a greased surface, gently roll to a 1/2-inch thickness, and cut with a donut cutter. Let the donuts sit out to rise again. Cover it with a loose cloth.
Step 4
Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat and stir in the vanilla and confectioners' sugar until smooth. If necessary, stir in the hot water a tablespoon at a time until the icing is thin but not watery. Turn off the heat.
Step 5
Heat the oil in a large heavy frying pan or deep fryer to 175°C (350°F). Carefully slide the donut into the hot oil with a wide spatula. Flip the donuts as they rise to the surface. Fry the donut until golden brown on all sides. Removed from the hot oil to drain on a wire rack. Dip donut in glaze while still warm, and set on a wire rack to drain excess. Place a cookie sheet or tray under the rack for easy cleanup.
